Rehabilitation after the hip replacement of the hip joint

Rehabilitation.Next day after surgery Hip replacement, the patient starts to work with a training specialist in remedial gymnastic.

The patient is allowed to rise from bed almost at once, but should use crutch for walking. Elderly and old patients are recommended to use walking-aid at the very beginning. If cement-type prosthesis was applied, we recommend walking with aid of a supporting device during up to one month, without limitations in loading. It is due to the fact that the prosthesis could be loaded at once, although some time is required for healing of soft tissues, damaged during the operation, and for recovery of muscles.

In case of cementless type of prosthesis, loading on operated limb shall be from 20% to 50% of body weight during the first three weeks, and will be increased to 100% during 4 – 6 weeks after surgery. To prevent thromboembolia, patients shall apply elastic bandage on their limbs, or use compression socks 2 – 3 months after operation.

Discharge for outpatient treatment shall occur in 5 – 10 days after operation.

Consultation is appointed 4 – 6 weeks after surgery for control X-Ray imaging of operated joint and giving recommendations regards further rehabilitation treatment.

This visit is intended for:

  • X-Ray imaging and analysis of operated joint;
  • Giving recommendations regards the further rehabilitation treatment.
