The Department has been established to provide high-qualified medical aid to athletes, ballet dances and to other people whose hobby is sport in cases of trauma injury or consequences of previous traumas, and for the treatment of injuries and diseases of the locomotor system as a result of chronic overload.

Chief of the department, dr hab.med., prof. Kostrub Oleksandr Oleksiiovych.

Staff of the Department for Sport and Ballet Trauma by SI ITO NAMSU performs the whole range of surgical operations using the most modern methods among those applied in the sphere of traumatology and orthopedics. Annually it treats over 800 patients with severe injuries and diseases of locomotion system (fractures, dislocations, ruptures of tendons and ligaments, degenerative diseases of joints).

Main focus of the clinic is arthroscopic operations of joints that ensure the fastest possible recovery of damaged joints.

Types of arthroscopic operations:

Knee joint:

  • meniscus resection;
  • meniscus suture;
  • resection of mediopatellar plica;
  • anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction;
  • posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction;
  • patello-femoral ligament reconstruction;
  • all types of articular cartilage reconstruction;
  • debridement of a joint;
  • synvectomy;
  • removal of chondromatosis bodies.

Shoulder joint:

  • shoulder joint stabilization;
  • rotator cuff suture;
  • selective capsulotomy;
  • subacromial decompression;
  • debridement of a joint;
  • removal of chondromatosis bodies.

Hip joint:

  • resection of joint labrum;
  • debridement of a joint;
  • synvectomy .

Elbow and ankle joints:

  • all types of joint cartilage reconstruction;
  • debridement of a joint;
  • synvectomy;
  • removal of chondromatosis bodies .

The clinic also provides treatment of muscle and ligament injuries. At that we use such methods as closed subcutaneous suture of Achilles tendon, anchor fixation in distal ligaments and tendons separation. In case of ARS syndrome we use growth factor.

In bone fractures we use all types of osteosynthesis by metal devices, including IM nailing, less-contact plates, external fixation devices.

The Department also performs initial and revision replacement of knee and hip joints using the most up-to-date prostheses by Zimmer. In post-operative period on the basis of the department we provide recovery treatment under supervision of experiences rehabilitologists.

The basic and priority direction of the Department’s scientific research is the development of new technologies for joint cartilage and tendons treatment. For almost 5 years we have been cooperating with Kharkiv Institute of Criobiology in matters of development and implementation of the methods based on use of autologous stem cells of a patient for tissue reconstruction of damaged joint cartilage. Our experimental study proved high efficiency and security of this method.

Injuries and diseases of the locomotor system are also treated in this clinic with injections of autologous plasma, rich in growth factors (PRP-therapy, growth factors, platelets growth factors, plasmolifting), their effectiveness is studied and new protocols, treatment methods and equipment for it are developed.

The Department also is developing the measures of prevention and treatment of post-traumatic osteoarthritis of knee joint in athletes. We develop methods of treatment and operations for recovery of the joint’s function.

All our methods are mostly based on use of less invasive (arthroscopic) manipulations for adequate elimination of the cause of the disease and for recovery of damaged joint in the shortest possible period thanks to causing no additional damage to healthy tissues.

The clinic staff are actively involved in international scientific and practical conferences and seminars, in cadaver courses and other forms of training in leading clinics in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, USA, etc. The leading direction of the clinic's activity is to improve the complex system of medical control of the state of health of athletes, ballet and circus actors who have suffered injuries of the locomotor system, treatment of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system of athletes.
