He is President of the Ukrainian Association of Endoscopic Spine Surgery and a member of the Scoliosis Research Society, AO Spine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko is a spine surgeon, orthopedic trauma surgeon and neurosurgeon; Doctor of Medical Sciences; Professor; Chief Research Fellow of the Spine Surgery Department with the Spinal Neurosurgery Center; President of the Ukrainian Association of Endoscopic Spine Surgery.
Personal experience in endoscopic spine surgery
Over the past eight years, Professor Iakiv Fishchenko has personally performed more than 3,000 endoscopic spine procedures.
In his practice, he uses exclusively the biportal endoscopic technique, which enables neural decompression and removal of disc herniations through two small surgical portals while preserving the anatomical structures of the spine.
Main areas of endoscopic spine surgery
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko performs biportal endoscopic surgery for lumbar and cervical disc herniations, spinal canal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and spinal instability.
In patients with advanced disc degeneration, instability, spondylolisthesis, previous spine surgery or other appropriate indications, endoscopic decompression may be combined with minimally invasive spinal stabilization using implants.
Cervical spine surgery
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko performs modern surgical treatment for cervical disc herniations and spinal canal stenosis, including biportal endoscopic removal of disc herniations and neural decompression, cervical disc replacement and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion — ACDF.
The optimal procedure is selected individually according to the location of the disc herniation, degree of neural compression, condition of the disc and presence of instability.
Anterior Scoliosis Correction — ASC
Since 2021, Professor Iakiv Fishchenko has personally performed more than 150 Anterior Scoliosis Correction — ASC procedures.
ASC is a modern surgical treatment for scoliosis without spinal fusion. It enables deformity correction while preserving as much spinal mobility as possible. ASC surgery is performed mainly in adolescents and adults after an individual assessment of indications.
Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko has personally performed the Nuss procedure since 2007. During this period, he has completed more than 2,000 Nuss procedures, performing approximately 100–120 operations annually.
The Nuss procedure is a minimally invasive correction of pectus excavatum using one or more corrective bars. The number of bars and surgical plan are determined individually according to the patient’s age and the type and severity of the deformity.
Kyphoplasty for vertebral fractures
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko performs minimally invasive kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures.
The procedure is intended to stabilize the fractured vertebra, reduce pain and, when possible, partially restore vertebral height. Indications are determined after reviewing CT or MRI findings, fracture morphology, bone quality and the patient’s overall condition.
Image-guided spinal injections and interventional pain treatment
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko performs diagnostic and therapeutic spinal injections under X-ray guidance, including epidural injections, selective nerve root blocks, facet joint blocks and sacroiliac joint injections.
Radiofrequency neuroablation is also performed when clinically indicated. X-ray guidance enables accurate control of instrument placement and medication delivery.
Scientific and educational activity
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko is the author of more than 140 scientific publications and two interactive atlases of biportal endoscopic spine surgery in Ukrainian and English.
The atlases contain structured educational material on surgical anatomy, planning and the techniques of biportal endoscopic spine surgery.

International training
Professor Iakiv Fishchenko completed professional training in spine surgery at leading medical centers in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Türkiye and South Korea.
He applies this international experience to the development of endoscopic spine surgery, dynamic scoliosis surgery and minimally invasive surgery for spinal and chest wall disorders in Ukraine.
